The K-12 Alliance of Michigan, a coalition of education leaders committed to fighting for strong K-12 schools across the state, announced today that Monroe County schools have joined the organization to further strengthen the work being done on behalf of Michigan’s schools.

“We’re excited to be joining the K-12 Alliance and add our voices to their advocacy on behalf of Michigan’s schools and students,” said Dr. Stephen McNew, Superintendent of Monroe ISD. “The work being done by the K-12 Alliance to support stronger budgets and better policies for our schools has been integral to the success of our efforts inside of the classroom and, as we look forward, that work will be more important than ever if we want to give each and every student the resources and support they both need and deserve.”

The K-12 Alliance is Michigan’s leading advocate on behalf of Michigan’s public schools. Starting off as the Tri-County Alliance for Public Education and including the school districts within Macomb, Oakland and Wayne Counties, the alliance expanded and rebranded in 2020 to add the districts within Genesee and St. Clair counties as well. This latest expansion to include Monroe County sees the organization now directly representing 123 school districts that collectively educate half of Michigan’s students.

“I’m proud of the success we’ve had as an organization because those efforts have directly translated into better policies and stronger funding support for every school in Michigan,” added Erik Edoff, President of the K-12 Alliance of Michigan and Superintendent of L’Anse Creuse Schools. “We’re thrilled to now have Monroe County joining us as their leadership will further strengthen the work we are doing on behalf of our schools. There’s a lot of work ahead in 2023 and having Monroe County working alongside us will only help us achieve our collective goals.”

Robert McCann remains the Executive Director of the K-12 Alliance of Michigan, while Katie Whitman-Herzer remains its Administrative Director.
