The Tri-County Alliance for Public Education (TCA) has awarded Congresswoman Debbie Dingell with its 2020 Champion for Students Award, honoring her service and commitment to supporting Michigan’s public schools & students.

“Congresswoman Dingell has been a lifelong advocate for our students and a tremendous partner to educators,” said Mark Greathead, TCA President & Superintendent of Woodhaven-Brownstown Schools. “As many of our own efforts have focused on making long-overdue policy changes in Lansing, Congresswoman Dingell has been a voice for us in Washington where she has consistently fought for the support and resources we need in our classrooms to give Michigan’s students the education they deserve.”

Greathead highlighted Congresswoman Dingell’s continued push to fully fund the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act to better support special education programs, her work on bi-partisan STEM education legislation and her vocal opposition to harmful policy changes within the US Department of Education as reasons why the TCA Board of Directors unanimously voted to honor her with this award.

“As someone who spent my career working on education and early childhood issues in Michigan, I know ensuring equal access to quality education is the foundation for success later in life,” said Dingell. “Working together with local, state, and federal partners, we’ve fought for increased funding for educators and diverse programs that prepare students for good-paying jobs. Thank you Tri-County Alliance for Public Education for this honor and being a partner. Together, we are committed to ensuring children receive quality education regardless of their zip code or socioeconomic status.”

The award was presented to Congresswoman Dingell by Wayne RESA Superintendent Dr. Randy Liepa on behalf of TCA and the more than 80 local school districts it represents in Wayne, Oakland and Macomb County. TCA members are collectively responsible for educating over 500,000 students.
